MHE-Demag Automatic Cranes with Vacuum Suckers Fostered Operational Excellence to the Paper Roll Industry
MHE-Demag supplied and installed 4 units of 2.8-ton double-girder automatic cranes with vacuum suckers to an international paper manufacturing and service conglomerate based in New Taipei City, Taiwan.
The 4 units of 2.8-ton double-girder automatic cranes with vacuum suckers were supplied directly from Demag, Germany and are the first fully automated cranes in Taiwan. With 5 paper mills and 19 box plants in Taiwan, China and Vietnam, they are distributing products all over the world.
MHE-Demag’s scope includes design, project execution management, installation, commissioning, test, and obtaining the crane license. Before the installation, storage capacity was not maximised as paper rolls were stacked as high as 8-meter height with the reliance on paper roll clamp forklift only which increases maintenance and repair cost of the paper roll clamp forklift due to frequent wear and tear over the years. The installation of automatic cranes with vacuum suckers in the Hou Li, Taichung, paper mill amplified space-saving as it allows the paper roll to be stacked up as high as 15 meters in height and run on a 24/7 production schedule without any manpower has subsequently improved production efficiency. At the same time, it ensures paper mill personnel’s safety and minimized losses associated with roll damage.
The storage capacity was maximized with 24 tons of paper rolls at 100% capacity and approximately 18 tons at 75% capacity for paper rolls of 1100-12500 mm in diameter. The automatic cranes with vacuum suckers bettered the maximum handling rate for storage and retrieval cycles at 30.5 cycles per hour per crane. Upon completion in 2009, the paper mill had logged on lesser roll damage, smoother material movement and improved storage capacity.
