V-Type Crane Light Weight Design in Action

Recently, MHE-Demag Australia handed over a V-type crane with 12.5t rated capacity, featuring twin DMR hoists and a span of over 23m, as a solution for Surdex Sheet & Coil, a Southern Steel Company who required an additional overhead crane due to an upgrade in their production processes to support their newly installed 8mm slitting line.

The company required the load capacity to be above 11t to lift steel coils and support the slitting process, but Surdex Sheet & Coil’s existing building was rated to only carry an overhead crane with 10t capacity. This building limitation was set in regard to a conventional Box-Girder crane, as the load and deadweight of the older and heavier girder design in combination would exceed the capabilities of the building’s support structure.

This posed a challenge to Surdex Sheet & Coil as they had to choose between investing in the upgrade of the steel structure of the building or to identify a different solution. After consulting with MHE-Demag, it was decided that the innovative V-type crane was the right fit for the project. The technical solution featured a V-type crane EVKE 12.5t (10t + 10t) with a combined capacity of 12.5t x 23m span with two EK-DMR-10-10-H20 hoists.

Surdex Sheet & Coil’s State Operations Manager in Victoria, Australia, Jerry Ismail expressed his appreciation for the new V-type crane.

“The V-type crane is a great fit for our purpose. Our existing building could only support a box-girder crane rated at 10t, which would have meant for us to reinforce the steel structure to handle the steel coils with just over 11t in weight and support our 8mm slitting line. The V-type crane is lighter and enabled us to install a crane rated at 12.5t without any modifications to the building. Making it the most cost effective solution, the V-type crane also looks great and robust. The operators have a very good impression after using it for the first few days.”
