Job Well Done on Remote Island
Special MHE-Demag team completes job on time
MHE-Demag carried out several refurbishments, modifications and supplied new cranes to Lihir, a remote island in Papua New Guinea. Due to logistics issues, it was more cost effective to carry out the work on site instead of shipping the cranes back to MHE-Demag’s nearest factory in Indonesia.
A special team was formed to work on site, and it comprised of staff from MHE-Demag Indonesia, Singapore and Thailand. The first refurbishment job done was for the cyclone maintenance/ball loading crane which is a SWF crane built in 1997, over sag mill number 1. All the components and electronics were removed, leaving only its structure. After the crane was cleared for continued safe use, MHE-Demag installed their components and electronics. Resources of the mine site were used to supply mobile cranes, sand blasting, non-destructive testing and painting for the refurbishment process.
The team completed the job in 30 days. The crane was used for maintenance and daily ball loading, so it was crucial to the customer that the downtime of the crane did not interfere with the scheduled shut downs and daily ball loading schedule.
