From traditional Power Conductors and Cable Festoon Systems, product development went from simple and advanced Cable Reeler Systems to today's invention of CPS (Contactless Power Systems) and SMG (Slottet Microwave Guide).

As its latest invention, the MHE-Demag Group together with Vahle GmbH has launched a top quality product for automated transfer from combustion driven to electric driven RTG's (Rubber Tyre Gantries) in Seaport operations.

Conductor Systems  

The main function of a conductor system is to transfer electricity from a stationary source to a mobile user (mobile electrification). Stationary conductor rails are mounted along the path of a vehicle that requires electric power. The stationary conductors are connected to a main power source. A current collector is mounted on the moving vehicle and is installed to make contact with the electrified conductors. The current collector is comprised of electric brushes that feed electricity into wires, which power the vehicle. The concept is similar to track lighting except that with track lighting the lights do not move. For our systems, the vehicle can move whilst picking up power from the conductor rails. Or it can also stand still. The moving vehicle can be anything, from a vehicle on an amusement ride or a crane unloading a ship, to production carriers on an assembly line.

Cable Festoon Systems  

Our Cable Festoon Systems feature a steel, stainless steel or PVC track enclosure for cable carriers (with wheels) to ride in. The cable carriers have saddles in many different sizes and types to accommodate one or multiple cables and hoses. These systems are also referred to as cable trolley systems. Furthermore, we offer festoon systems where the cable carriers run on standard shape I-Beams. I-Beam carriers can operate faster than C-Track systems and can carry very large and heavy cable packages. These systems can also be motorised to be able to handle very fast operating STS, Ship to Shore, cranes.

Cable Reel Systems  

Cable reels can be used for many systems that require the payout and retrieval of cable to a moving vehicle. These are often used for lifting devices or to connect power to equipment during maintenance. If your system requires a heavy-duty cable reel, we recommend our motor driven cable reels. These cable reels can accommodate heavier cables over longer distances than spring operated cable reels.

Contactless Power Systems  

CPS®(Contactless Power System) is the contactless power transmission system from VAHLE. The power is transmitted inductively, similar to the transformer principle along an "elongated" coil.

Data Communication Systems  

We offer several types of data communication for mobile applications. Mobile electrification combined with data communication and vehicle positioning (see our absolute positioning system "APOS") allows full automation for mobile equipment.

Vahle Powercom 485 is a system that communicates via two dedicated conductors to vehicles or carriers on a system (or track). The advantage of this system is the combination of power transfer via conductor bars with data communication.

For higher data rates and multiple channels of data (including video and Ethernet) the SMG (Slotted Microwave Guide) system is available. The principle for this system is an antenna mounted to a mobile vehicle that travels within an aluminium extrusion. The RF within the extrusion is immune from outside interference or from causing interference. One advantage of the SMG System is that it offers high data rates and a high level of reliability.

Typical applications for (mobile) data communication systems include assembly automation and process equipment as well as entertainment industry applications.

Battery Charging Contacts  

A battery-charging contact consists of a contact plate, which is mounted on the floor in the track of the AGV (Automatic Guided Vehicle) or, in some cases, also to both the side and a current collector, which is mounted on the AGV (Automatic Guided Vehicle).

Absolute Positioning Systems  

VAHLE offers an absolute positioning system (APOS). A reading head similar to a current collector reads positioning off a code rail. The code rail is typically installed with a conductor system (enclosed or unipole). Absolute positioning refers to the accuracy of positioning. For the APOS system, the accuracy is approximately 1 mm (approximately 1/32"). Mobile equipment or vehicles can be fully automated with power (conductor system), data transfer (VAHLE data systems) and positioning (VAHLE APOS). From a stationary control room you have the ability to power a moving vehicle, communicate with it and know precisely where it is located.

Electrification of Rubber Tired Gantries  

VAHLE is the first company worldwide to develop an automated entry
system into the container alleys without the need for an additional manual
connection to the conductor bar. This new system is characterised as
efficient, fast and reliable, quiet and environmentally friendly. The
automated telescope arm is simply controlled via a touchpad in the
RTG driver’s cabin; further advantages lie with the very short entry and
exit times into the alley and in the low space requirements of the 2+2
power-rail assembly.
