MHE-Demag Cranes Provide Heavy Lifting Solution to Malaysia’s Leading Shipyard
MHE-Demag provides best lifting solution for yard improvement plans for BNS.
Boustead Naval Shipyard (BNS) is a prominent name in the Malaysian shipbuilding industry. Since its inception in 1984, BNS has handled several notable projects such as the fabrication of patrol vessels, anchor handling tugs, fast troop carriers, offshore support carriers, luxury yachts and vehicular ferries.
As the preferred contractor to the Royal Malaysian Navy, BNS secured a string of contracts to build new warships, spares, maintenance and to provide integrated logistics support. In November 2015, the company was awarded the contract for maintenance, repair, and overhaul of two submarines owned by the Royal Malaysia Navy.
With such notable projects, BNS implemented a yard improvement programme to improvise yard operation, service efficiency and to double yard productivity. One of the main yard improvement plans included the extension of the fabrication yard, and BNS reached out to MHE-Demag to provide a lifting solution for them in this area.
For BNS’s main indoor assembly plant, MHE-Demag supplied two units of 20-tonne Overhead Cranes with a 40-metre span. These cranes were installed 32 metres above ground and were used to weld together hull components to create prefabricated module blocks. Upon completion, these blocks were then transported to the outdoor fabrication yard for assembly.
For the outdoor fabrication yard, MHE-Demag supplied two units of 20-tonne Gantry Cranes with a 45-metre span. The Gantry Cranes would be used to lift the prefabricated module blocks which would be welded together with the rest of the blocks.
BNS’ head of department for yard services, Ahmad Khamal expressed his certainty in MHE-Demag’s capabilities.
“Heavy lifting requires proven hoisting capabilities and we are confident MHE-Demag’s hoisting solutions are able to meet our requirements. We are looking forward to MHE-Demag’s continuous support,” he says.
